The London Borough of Newham is offering an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and detail-oriented individual to join its Counter Fraud Team as an Apprentice Counter Fraud Investigator. This role is ideal for someone eager to begin a career in fraud prevention and investigation while earning a nationally recognised qualification through a structured apprenticeship programme.

As an Apprentice Investigator, you will work within a professional team dedicated to protecting public funds and ensuring fairness across council services. You will gain hands-on investigative experience, assist in identifying fraudulent activities, and contribute to safeguarding vital local resources. This role combines practical, on-the-job training with professional development and academic learning, helping you build a solid foundation for a career in counter fraud investigation.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist senior investigators in examining cases of suspected fraud across various council services, including housing, council tax, business rates, and benefits.

  • Gather, document, and analyse evidence to support case findings and enforcement actions.

  • Conduct interviews under supervision and help prepare case files and reports for legal or disciplinary proceedings.

  • Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies to share intelligence and strengthen anti-fraud efforts.

  • Learn and apply relevant legislation, policies, and investigation techniques, including data protection and evidence management.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in accordance with council and legal standards.

  • Successfully complete apprenticeship training and assessments with continuous support from mentors and the learning provider.


Candidate Requirements:

  • Minimum of A Levels (or equivalent) and GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above.

  • Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and integrity in handling sensitive information.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.

  • High motivation to learn and contribute to protecting public services.

  • Eligibility to work in the UK and participate in an apprenticeship scheme.

  • Prior experience or education related to investigation, law enforcement, or public administration is advantageous but not required.

Work Environment:

This is a hybrid position, with approximately two days per week on-site in the borough and the remainder working remotely. The team operates in a supportive and collaborative environment that values ethical conduct, professional development, and community impact.
