The Soil Association, a leading organization promoting organic food and farming, is seeking an Aquaculture Representative for its Standards Board. This non-executive voluntary role allows you to represent the aquaculture sector and contribute to the development and oversight of Soil Association standards for UK & EU organic farming, food, and other standards schemes.

The organization pioneered standards for organic aquaculture, and this role plays a crucial part in shaping higher standards for farmed salmon, other finfish, bivalves, and seaweed, while influencing legislation nationally and internationally.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Representing the aquaculture sector on the Standards Board

  • Advising on mandates and objectives developed by staff-led steering groups

  • Supporting standards development and assessing their impact

  • Potentially chairing meetings of specialist task and finish groups as needed

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Practical experience and technical knowledge in organic aquaculture

  • Independent thinking with understanding of sector challenges

  • Clear communication and interpersonal skills

  • Empathy with Soil Association’s objectives for food, organic products, farming, and forestry

  • Desirable: experience in committee work or evaluating projects and schemes within the sector

Time Commitment:

  • Attend several meetings per year (online and face-to-face)

  • Complete preparatory reading for meetings

  • Other involvement as appropriate

  • Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses covered
