Description:
The Environment Agency is seeking a confident and enthusiastic Assistant Geomatics Analyst to join their National Monitoring Survey team. This role focuses on delivering remote sensing products, with a particular emphasis on airborne optical data to support intertidal vegetation mapping, especially saltmarsh extent and zonation. The role contributes to statutory reporting obligations under the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations.
The position involves processing and analysing aerial photography and other airborne optical datasets, with additional use of satellite and drone data as appropriate. Ground truth data collection and integration may also be required to validate remote sensing outputs.
Key Responsibilities:
Process and analyse airborne, satellite, and drone imagery for habitat mapping.
Map saltmarsh extent and zonation using high-resolution aerial imagery.
Monitor opportunistic macro algae in intertidal zones.
Edit existing spatial features and digitise new extents based on remote sensing interpretation.
Identify vegetation types in imagery using broad classification systems.
Support environmental monitoring and incident response through remote sensing analysis.
Work collaboratively with the National Monitoring Survey team and other EA teams to deliver high-quality spatial data.
Required Skills and Experience:
Degree in Geography, Remote Sensing, GIS, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
Strong GIS skills, preferably with ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcMap).
Practical experience with remote sensing data, particularly airborne optical imagery.
Understanding of image classification techniques for habitat mapping.
Experience handling large spatial datasets, editing spatial features, and digitising new extents.
Ability to identify vegetation types using classification systems.
Strong organisational skills, professional attitude, and effective communication.
Competencies Assessed:
Data and Information Management: Handling, storing, and organising spatial data; producing accurate reports; applying robust data management practices.
Achieves Results: Prioritising and organising tasks to meet deadlines; demonstrating tenacity, resilience, and commitment.
Scientific Knowledge: Applying remote sensing and GIS knowledge to produce habitat maps and analytical outputs that support environmental monitoring.
Contract & Location Details:
Full-time position up to November 2026.
Based in Tewkesbury with travel to the Geomatics team hub in Bath and other EA offices as required.
