Description:

To contribute to elements of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students within Catalan and Spanish studies in the Department of Modern Languages. Teaching will be across both the BA in Modern Languages programme and our Institution-wide Languages for All provision.

Role Summary

Teaching- including preparation, delivery and marking- Catalan and Spanish across a range of levels on the BA Modern Languages programme and across the Institution-wide Languages for All provision. Contributing to the preparation of teaching materials, collaborating in organising cultural and academic activities planned by the section of Catalan Studies in the Department of Modern Languages, and providing assistance to the University Open Days.

Main Duties

  • Teaching Catalan Language across range of levels- up to 7 hours per week.
  • Teaching Spanish Language across a range of levels including potentially the Department’s Institution-wide Languages for All programme – up to 10 hours per week.
  • The candidate will have to mark, contribute to the preparation of teaching materials, collaborate in organising cultural and academic activities planned by the section of Catalan Studies in the Department of Modern Languages, and provide assistance to the University Open Days.
  • Participation in relevant departmental meetings, examination boards, etc.
  • Regular meetings as requested and agreed with an academic mentor (experienced member of the German Studies staff).
  • Planning and preparation of teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
  • Assist students by offering advice to help them with academic issues.
  • Assist with the marking of coursework and applying assessment criteria, as directed.
  • Update own subject knowledge, and to develop own teaching expertise.
  • Keep subject knowledge up-to-date as required and develop teaching expertise.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of teaching.

Person Specification

  • Hold a first degree in the field of Arts and Humanities, preferably in Catalan Philology.
  • Have Catalan language certificate C2.
  • Have English proficiency (IELTS 7 or higher)
  • Be experienced in teaching Catalan language.
  • The ability and willingness to develop good working relationships with students and teachers.
  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully.
