Make-A-Wish® UK is seeking a passionate and experienced Community Volunteering Manager to lead and manage the involvement of volunteers and post-wish families across a variety of income-generating products and events. This vital role focuses on fostering meaningful engagement in challenge events, community fundraising, payroll giving, campaigns, and lottery activities.

The Community Volunteering Manager will oversee the full volunteer journey, from recruitment and onboarding through to event-day leadership, ensuring exceptional support for key fundraising activities, including flagship balls and owned events. Working collaboratively with the Income & Engagement team, the successful candidate will create pathways for post-wish families and volunteers to remain engaged long-term, driving income growth and community impact.

This role also involves supporting the delivery of the Wish It On alumni programme and contributing to the community referral partner strategy, creating sustainable involvement opportunities for supporters.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the recruitment, matching, and onboarding of volunteers for national campaigns and local community events.

  • Partner with the Income & Engagement team to plan volunteer resources aligned with campaign goals.

  • Serve as on-the-ground volunteer lead at major events, ensuring smooth execution and meaningful experiences.

  • Create and deliver engaging volunteer briefings, training, and resources.

  • Develop and maintain volunteer role descriptions, operational protocols, and training materials.

  • Manage complex volunteer logistics, including travel, accommodation, safeguarding, and accessibility requirements.

  • Track and evidence volunteer impact on income generation and mission delivery.

  • Evaluate volunteer engagement using feedback and data insights to refine strategies.


Essential Criteria

  • NVQ 3 or equivalent in volunteer management, community engagement, events, fundraising, or nonprofit leadership.

  • Proven experience managing volunteers in both fundraising and community settings.

  • Strong understanding of volunteer contributions to income generation and event success.

  • Experience in large-scale event volunteer leadership.

  • Knowledge of safeguarding, risk management, and volunteer engagement best practices.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong training, onboarding, and stewardship experience for volunteers.
