WhatsInMyWater, a data-focused environmental startup, is offering a Summer Internship position for a Software/Data Intern to contribute to its mission of improving water-quality transparency in the UK. The company specializes in aggregating and analyzing UK water data to create user-personalized water-quality reports powered by scientific insights and AI technologies.
This on-site internship in London is a highly flexible, unpaid opportunity designed to offer aspiring developers and data scientists real-world experience in building full-stack data platforms. You will join a fast-paced team and work on real-time projects involving data scraping, AI-enhanced reporting, backend development, and collaborative scientific research translation.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain web-scraping scripts (Python/Go) to extract water-quality data from diverse sources including government websites, PDFs (OCR), and public APIs
Build a robust, reusable, and scalable scraping pipeline with proper logging, scheduling, and error handling
Design and optimize large-scale time-series data schemas in Postgres databases
Support backend infrastructure using Docker, AWS, and CI/CD pipelines
Work on AI-based improvements to water-quality reports, focusing on prompt engineering and personalisation
Collaborate with researchers to translate complex biomarker data into user-friendly metrics
Assist with documentation, user-facing content, and wireframes as part of product development
Requirements:
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Environmental Science, or a related field
Proficiency in Python, Go, or TypeScript
Experience or familiarity with scraping tools (e.g., BeautifulSoup, Scrapy, OCR tools) and APIs
Interest in database systems, especially Postgres
Passion for AI, data visualization, or water-quality research
Strong collaborative and communication skills in a startup setting
