Deputy Production Editor, Observer New Review

Description:

The Observer New Review is seeking an experienced Deputy Production Editor to support its production team. The Observer is known for its commitment to journalistic integrity, curiosity, and cultural exploration, covering a wide range of topics, including culture, technology, science, society, film, theatre, music, books, and TV.

In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the smooth production of The Observer’s New Review, maintaining editorial standards and working across print and digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

✔ Deputise for the Production Editor – Assign copy and manage workflow to ensure timely and high-quality production
✔ Manage Subediting Resources – Oversee work and holiday schedules to ensure efficient use of subediting resources
✔ Subediting & Layout – Perform all production tasks, including subbing, revising, and layout work
✔ Cross-Department Coordination – Work closely with prepress, imaging, graphics, picture desk, design, advertising, legal, and other departments
✔ Cross-Platform Production – Develop digital subediting skills and support the subediting team in doing the same

Key Skills & Experience Required:

✔ Strong editorial judgment and ability to handle writers’ copy sensitively
✔ Extensive subbing and production experience for both print and digital (InCopy/InDesign proficiency required)
✔ Proficiency in page layout and formatting
✔ Excellent planning, organisational, and communication skills
✔ Ability to adapt quickly to new editorial tools and processes
