The Institute of Physics (IOP), a prestigious scientific institution and professional body for physics in the UK and Ireland, is seeking a visionary and values-driven Director of Membership & Inclusion to join its Executive Team. Based in London with a hybrid working model, this strategic leadership role will play a central part in shaping the future of the physics profession through inclusive engagement, professional support, and regional outreach.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, the Director will lead the Membership & Inclusion department, overseeing initiatives that span member engagement, diversity and inclusion (EDI), regional development, and professional recognition. This is a unique opportunity to influence organizational culture, governance, and service delivery at one of the UK’s most respected scientific institutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement strategic plans for member recruitment, engagement, retention, and professional support
Oversee all aspects of membership services including events, communities, member groups, and registration pathways
Embed equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across the organization through flagship programmes such as the Physics Inclusion Award and Limit Less
Lead IOP’s outreach and engagement across UK regions, devolved nations, and Ireland, ensuring local priorities are integrated into national strategies
Contribute to broader executive decision-making, governance, and organizational excellence
Represent IOP externally with clarity, strategic insight, and integrity
Requirements:
Proven leadership experience at senior level within a membership-based or professional body
Track record in executing membership engagement strategies, building inclusive cultures, and managing regional or cross-functional teams
Strong understanding of EDI best practices and experience embedding inclusive principles into operations
Strategic, collaborative leadership style with excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
A background in science, education, or a technical field is desirable, though not mandatory
