Description:
Technical Support
- Provide support for experimental projects including basic design, construction, assembly and operation
- Provide support and advice to academics and researchers in the design of laboratory equipment, samples and test pieces
- Be familiar with the operation of a range of laboratory equipment
- Provide support service commensurate with both traditional and modern workshop skills for the production and modification of equipment
- To ensure all machines are functional and working in optimal condition.
Operational Management
- Oversee all areas of the labs for smooth running
- Maintain consumables stocks and waste chemical removal
- Arranging major repairs and retrofitting of equipment to modernise the full range of communal apparatus.
- Participation in Theme meetings with the academic staff and engage with prioritisation of tasks, approach to lab safety, financial management
- Run the Theme job scheduling process
- Liaise with senior laboratory users
Training
- Run laboratory inductions and safety training; maintain register of qualified lab users.
- Machine and task training / instruction
- Provide instruction to laboratory users on the operation of specialist equipment and resources
Essential requirements
Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following:
- HNC/HND or equivalent in a materials/engineering subject.
- Completion of a recognised apprenticeship
- Experience of working in a university workshop/laboratory environment.
- Experience of servo hydraulic actuators (Instron, Enerpac etc.).
- Experience in the use of traditional engineering machines and hand tools.
- Demonstrable relevant practical experience.
- Ability to work from engineering drawings and written instructions
- Experience of using own initiative, innovation and developing own ideas
- Experience of using a wide range of materials and able to work from drawings, sketches and verbal instructions.
