Keystone Archaeology Ltd, a cross-hire archaeology company with a strong focus on fairness, respect, and professional support, is expanding its freelance field team to meet rising project demands. The company is committed to delivering high-quality results for clients while ensuring excellent treatment for freelance team members. They welcome both experienced freelance archaeologists and those currently employed in archaeological units who are considering a move to self-employment, offering guidance and support to ease the transition.

The current openings are for a 4–6 month assignment working on two exciting archaeological projects in the Oxfordshire and Swindon areas. The projects involve a range of field archaeology tasks, with one offering optional daily overtime for additional flexibility and earning potential. Successful candidates will play a key role in excavation, documentation, and analysis of archaeological sites, ensuring findings are recorded with precision and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct excavation and fieldwork in accordance with professional archaeological standards.

  • Document and record archaeological features, contexts, and finds in detail.

  • Perform analysis and interpretation of archaeological data to support project conclusions.

  • Collaborate closely with other team members to maintain high-quality outcomes.

  • For supervisors: oversee field operations, ensuring compliance with safety and procedural requirements, and manage on-site teams effectively.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum 1 year of hands-on excavation and fieldwork experience.

  • SSSTS certification required for Supervisor positions.

  • Strong academic or professional background in archaeology.

  • Solid analytical and research skills for interpreting archaeological evidence.

  • Willingness and ability to work on-site in Oxfordshire.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting findings.

  • A relevant degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field is highly desirable.
