Description:
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA), the governing and regulatory body for horseracing in Great Britain, is looking to appoint a Health and Safety Manager on a part-time, fixed-term basis for a period of 2 years. This exciting new in-house opportunity will focus on developing, implementing, and enhancing the operational Health and Safety system across the organisation’s varied working environments—covering racecourses, training yards, offices, and remote/home-based working environments.
As the regulatory authority for British horseracing, BHA’s primary goal is to ensure the highest standards are upheld both on and off the racecourse, and the Health & Safety Manager will play a key role in ensuring these standards are embedded within the organisation itself.
Key Responsibilities:
✅ Work closely with department leaders to design and implement a Health & Safety system tailored to the needs of a multi-location organisation, ensuring compliance across racecourses, training yards, offices, and remote settings.
✅ Review current working practices, conduct risk assessments, and lead on safety inspections across diverse environments.
✅ Advise teams on safe working practices and ensure that Health & Safety policies are up to date, practical, and aligned with best practice regulations.
✅ Develop and promote a safety-first culture, encouraging employees to actively engage in safety initiatives.
✅ Act as a trusted partner to senior leaders, influencing and supporting the development of policies, practices, and Health & Safety initiatives.
✅ Develop and implement Health & Safety training programmes, and ensure that staff at all levels understand their responsibilities and have the tools to operate safely.
✅ Lead on the creation and delivery of annual Health & Safety plans, ensuring they are aligned with the organisation’s people strategy.
✅ Monitor legislative changes and ensure BHA remains fully compliant with current and future Health & Safety regulations.
Qualifications & Skills:
✔️ NEBOSH qualification (or equivalent) is highly preferred.
✔️ Proven experience in a similar Health & Safety management role—experience within sporting, regulatory, or equine sectors would be advantageous.
✔️ Strong working knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation and best practices.
✔️ Experience conducting risk assessments, safety audits, and policy development across diverse work environments (including field-based and remote teams).
✔️ Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage, train, and influence teams at all levels.
✔️ Proactive, hands-on approach with strong problem-solving abilities.
✔️ Ability to travel nationally on a regular basis and work flexibly as required.
✔️ Passionate about fostering a safety-first culture and able to drive cultural change across widespread teams.
