Mechanical Engineering

Description:

The University of East London (UEL) is seeking dedicated and experienced professionals in Mechanical Engineering to serve as volunteer career mentors for current university students and recent graduates. This initiative is part of UEL’s Professional Mentoring Programme, designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and career success by fostering professional growth, confidence, and employability skills.

As a Career Mentor, you will play a vital role in guiding and inspiring students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend university and come from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. UEL prides itself on its inclusive and forward-thinking environment, with over 120 nationalities represented and 70% of students from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. Your contribution will help shape the next generation of Mechanical Engineering professionals by offering insights, advice, and encouragement to help them navigate their career paths.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in an 8-week mentoring relationship, meeting virtually (in-person optional) for at least 3 hours total.

  • Provide career guidance and industry insights relevant to Mechanical Engineering.

  • Support mentees in developing employability and interpersonal skills.

  • Help mentees connect academic knowledge to career aspirations.

  • Explore potential career pathways and set achievable professional goals.

  • Boost mentees’ confidence, self-esteem, and networking abilities.

  • Offer encouragement, constructive feedback, and practical advice based on real-world experience.

Benefits for Mentors:

  • Enhance your own coaching and mentoring skills.

  • Contribute to the development of future Mechanical Engineering talent.

  • Gain personal satisfaction from making a meaningful impact.

  • Receive a certificate as evidence of your continued professional development.

  • Strengthen your connection with UEL and its diverse student community.

How it Works:
Once accepted, mentors attend a virtual training session before being matched with a student based on expertise and sector. Meetings are flexible and can be arranged to suit both parties.
