Element Materials Technology, one of the world’s leading testing, inspection, and certification organizations, is seeking a Deputy Laboratory Manager for its Door & Window Testing Laboratory in Wednesbury. This key leadership position offers an exciting opportunity to oversee and optimize laboratory operations, ensure quality and safety standards, and contribute to the continued growth of Element’s BUILT division.
The successful candidate will be an experienced technical leader capable of managing teams, coordinating projects, and maintaining a culture of safety, quality, and operational excellence. Working closely with the Laboratory Manager and General Manager, this role involves ensuring that all testing activities are conducted efficiently, accurately, and to the highest professional standards.
Lead and promote a safety-first culture, ensuring full compliance with company safety and quality standards.
Assist the Laboratory Manager/General Manager in overseeing the efficient daily operations and long-term growth of the department.
Plan, assign, and schedule work for designated laboratory staff to meet deadlines and project requirements.
Coordinate and manage engineering projects from initiation to completion, ensuring accuracy and adherence to client specifications.
Maintain high standards of test report quality, timeliness, and consistency.
Build a strong understanding of Element’s testing capabilities and processes to effectively communicate value to clients.
Manage staffing decisions, including recruitment, performance management, and scheduling.
Encourage professional growth and create an inclusive, respectful work environment for all team members.
Contribute to administrative and operational efficiency, including invoicing, reporting, and process improvements.
Promote continuous improvement through methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and 5S.
Provide expert technical leadership and oversee the operation of advanced testing equipment.
Educational Background: HNC/HND in Mechanical or Materials Engineering (or equivalent qualification).
Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a leadership role within a laboratory, manufacturing, or engineering environment.
Proven technical expertise in laboratory operations, equipment handling, and test specifications.
Strong understanding of laboratory safety standards and testing procedures.
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to interpret blueprints, test plans, and technical documentation accurately.
Proficiency in computer applications and basic mathematical concepts (algebra, geometry).
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
Familiarity with continuous improvement disciplines such as Six Sigma or Lean preferred.
