Optical Systems Engineer

Description:

Optical Systems Engineer – Earth Observation Satellite Optics (Onsite, Surrey)

We are seeking an experienced Optical Systems Engineer with deep expertise in Earth Observation (EO) satellite optics to lead the technical development of a spaceborne optical payload for our NewSpace client - a rapidly expanding space technology company based in the UK.

This role is based full-time onsite (5 days per week) in Guildford for the duration of the payload build phase.

You will be embedded within the satellite manufacturer’s Optical Imaging team, driving optical system architecture, performance, integration and verification during an intensive hands-on build programme. Following completion of the build phase, you will transition into a broader technical role supporting future payload development and long-term optical strategy.

You will receive day-to-day technical direction from the onsite Optical Lead, with overall line management provided by your employing organisation.

This is a senior, hands-on opportunity to shape and deliver high-performance optical systems for Earth Observation satellites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development of optical system architecture, requirements and trade studies for an EO payload
  • Perform optical design, modelling and performance analysis (image quality, MTF, stray light, tolerancing)
  • Define subsystem and component specifications; oversee manufacturing and supplier activities
  • Participate hands-on in optical integration, alignment and verification activities
  • Support environmental testing and performance validation
  • Maintain risk registers, mitigation plans, development schedules and technical inputs
  • Produce and own technical documentation including requirements traceability, verification reports and design records
  • Support technical reviews, proposals and knowledge transfer activities
  • Work closely within a multidisciplinary project team

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Optics, Physics or relevant Engineering discipline
  • Extensive experience in Earth Observation satellite optical systems
  • Proven end-to-end payload experience (concept through delivery)
  • Strong hands-on optical integration, alignment and test experience
  • Experience with interferometry, MTF testing and optical verification
  • Proficiency in optical design and analysis tools (e.g. Zemax/OpticStudio)
  • Experience with modelling tools (e.g. Python; mechanical/thermal modelling tools desirable)

Desirable Skills

  • Strong systems engineering and requirements management capability
  • Experience conducting optical trade studies and performance optimisation
  • Excellent technical documentation skills
  • Comfortable working onsite within a manufacturer environment
  • Able to operate effectively under schedule pressure
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Proactive, adaptable and solutions-focused
  • Passion for advanced space-based imaging systems

Why Apply?

  • Lead development of advanced Earth Observation satellite optics
  • Play a key technical role in delivering high-performance space payloads
  • Work in a focused, high-growth space environment
  • Contribute to impactful EO missions supporting defence and climate applications
