Peterborough City Council is seeking a Planning and Highways Lawyer to support major urban development and regeneration initiatives shaping the city’s future. This permanent role offers a competitive salary package, hybrid working (only 2 days per week in office), and the opportunity to work on transformational projects including the Station Quarter Regeneration, one of the largest in the East of England.

As a vital part of the legal services team, the Planning and Highways Lawyer will manage a diverse caseload, focusing on complex planning applications, Section 106 agreements, infrastructure and transport projects, judicial reviews, and strategic development matters. This role offers the unique opportunity to influence and contribute to Peterborough's sustainable growth and urban transformation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage complex planning and highways legal cases

• Draft and negotiate Section 106 agreements and planning obligations

• Provide legal representation at Planning Committee meetings

• Advise on major development schemes, planning appeals, enforcement, and judicial reviews

• Handle highways agreements, transport infrastructure, and adoption processes

• Collaborate with planning officers, developers, and external stakeholders

• Support the Council’s strategic development initiatives and regeneration priorities

Candidate Requirements:

• Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEx with a current practicing certificate

• Proven experience in planning law and related development procedures

• Strong understanding of highways law and infrastructure planning

• Expertise in drafting and negotiating Section 106 agreements

• Confident in presenting at committees and engaging with various stakeholders

• Ability to manage multi-party negotiations and complex legal processes

• Commercial awareness and interest in sustainable urban development
