Principal Airfield Planner

 

Description:

Mott MacDonald, a global engineering, management, and development consultancy, is seeking a Principal Airfield Planner to join its aviation team in the UK. The role involves planning and delivering airport assignments worldwide, from small regional airports to major international hubs such as London Heathrow, Hong Kong International, Singapore Changi, and New York JFK. This position offers opportunities to travel overseas and collaborate with diverse, multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical specialist in airfield planning and operations across all airport facilities

  • Manage and deliver airport masterplans, facility planning, capacity and demand analysis, and simulation modelling

  • Coordinate and manage airport planning & capacity tasks including airfield, apron, terminals, landside transport, ancillary facilities, and utilities

  • Act as Project Manager for medium to large projects and significant technical airport planning workstreams

  • Train, mentor, and develop junior team members in airfield planning expertise

  • Build and nurture relationships with clients and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery and identify new business opportunities

  • Contribute to quality proposals and business development activities

  • Collaborate with other disciplines such as airfield engineering, forecasting, project & asset management, and business planning

Candidate Requirements:

  • Degree in aeronautical engineering, civil engineering, air transport management, airport planning, or equivalent relevant qualification

  • Professional aviation industry experience; chartership desirable but not essential

  • Proactive, methodical, and collaborative mindset with strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to manage medium to large project workstreams and supervise project teams

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; attention to detail in technical drawings and reports

  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel; knowledge of Power BI, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AviPlan, Infraworks, Navisworks, Revit, and simulation/modelling tools desirable
