Description:

Mott MacDonald, a global engineering, management, and development consultancy, is seeking a Principal Geomorphologist to join their Water Consultancy Division. The position is available in multiple UK cities including Brighton, Manchester, Cardiff, Leeds, and others, offering a flexible working approach.

This role is perfect for a highly skilled geomorphologist passionate about sustainable water solutions and the restoration and preservation of river ecosystems. You will be part of a large team of experts in water resources and flood risk, working across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver impactful and technically complex projects.

As part of Mott MacDonald's mission to improve society, your input will shape critical flood management, river restoration, infrastructure protection, and climate resilience initiatives. Your leadership will influence engineering decisions that align with nature-based solutions and bring lasting environmental and social benefits.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver technical geomorphological input on projects including river restoration, erosion risk assessment, and flood risk mitigation

  • Prepare environmental assessments focused on hydromorphology (e.g. Water Framework Regulations)

  • Conduct field surveys and analyze data to support erosion risk and mitigation design

  • Mentor and support junior team members and contribute to professional development across the team

  • Maintain client relationships, represent the company at industry events, and contribute thought leadership in the sector

  • Lead multi-disciplinary coordination in developing sustainable water solutions and channel designs


Candidate Requirements:

Essential:

  • Degree-level qualification in geography, geomorphology, hydrology, environmental science, catchment science, or a related field

  • Chartered status with a recognized professional body

  • Demonstrable success in river geomorphology project delivery, both field and desk-based

  • Strong understanding of environmental and water-related regulations

  • Proficient in environmental data analysis and reporting

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor staff and collaborate across technical teams

Desirable:

  • Interests in water quality, hydrology, or aquatic ecology

  • Willingness to innovate and apply new tools in data collection and assessment

  • This position is full-time and permanent
