Description:
Mott MacDonald, a globally recognized engineering and development consultancy with a strong presence in more than 50 countries, is looking to recruit a highly skilled and experienced Principal ITS Engineer. This role sits within the Technology Services team of the Transport and Mobility Solutions (TMS) Division, focusing on intelligent transport systems that serve local roads, major highways, and public transport networks.
As a Principal ITS Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, specifying, and delivering advanced ITS projects. These include smart motorway infrastructure, localised installations (such as VMS, CCTV, and meteorological stations), and cutting-edge transport technology solutions. Your role will involve both technical contributions and team leadership, including mentoring junior engineers, collaborating with national clients, and ensuring technical and commercial excellence across projects.
Design and specify a wide variety of ITS projects across the UK and internationally.
Provide technical leadership and high-quality design input throughout the lifecycle of ITS projects.
Travel weekly to the Hampshire area to support a key client project, coordinated with other team members based in Bristol and Southampton offices.
Lead and support colleagues by offering mentoring, training, and supervision within a collaborative, client-facing team environment.
Interpret and apply national standards, specifications, and ITS equipment capabilities.
Act as a senior project representative in collaborative environments involving clients and multiple stakeholders.
Manage or contribute to large-scale ITS implementations, from feasibility studies to post-installation performance analysis.
Stay abreast of current and emerging ITS technologies and their applications in the transportation sector.
Essential:
BEng / BSc in Engineering or a closely related field, or significant relevant professional experience.
Demonstrable experience in UK-based ITS scheme design and delivery.
Strong understanding of relevant UK standards, equipment capabilities, and technical specifications.
Chartered status with a professional engineering institution (e.g. CIHT, IET, IHE).
Desirable:
Prior experience with Highways England (now National Highways) or UK local authorities.
Experience in designing and managing major ITS projects.
Collaborative project delivery experience.
Project management knowledge within ITS project contexts.
Ability to foster strong client relationships and work effectively within diverse project teams.
Sector 8 Accreditation (highly advantageous).
Permanent full-time role.
Flexible location across major UK cities (e.g., Altrincham, London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton, etc.).
Weekly travel to Hampshire region required for client engagement.
