Birmingham City Council, the largest local authority in Europe, is deeply committed to addressing the climate emergency and achieving its net zero targets. As a Principal Energy & Sustainability Officer in the Route to Net Zero (R20) team, you will play a central role in shaping and delivering the city’s energy strategy, supporting sustainable development, and driving impactful climate initiatives. This is a high-impact role for an experienced professional who can combine technical expertise with strategic influence across departments and stakeholders.

You will be responsible for leading energy planning and delivery initiatives in alignment with Birmingham’s Carbon Roadmap and Development Plan. The role will involve providing expert advice on sustainable construction, carbon reduction, and energy infrastructure, while ensuring compliance with best practice and UK climate commitments. You will analyse and monitor the city’s energy infrastructure to identify opportunities for clean generation, storage, and energy security improvements.

In addition, you will develop and manage major climate projects, including funding bids and partnership initiatives, to support the city’s long-term sustainability goals. This will involve close collaboration with internal teams, local businesses, regional partners, and national stakeholders. You will also produce policy documents, reports, and strategic briefings to inform senior leadership and drive effective decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead energy planning and delivery projects to reduce carbon emissions and support Birmingham’s sustainable growth.

• Provide technical and policy expertise on climate change, energy, and sustainable development.

• Monitor and evaluate the city’s energy infrastructure, proposing strategies for clean generation and resilience.

• Develop and manage funding applications and partnerships to advance climate initiatives.

• Collaborate with planning, regeneration, and policy teams to embed sustainability into projects.

• Produce policy guidance, reports, and recommendations aligned with legislation and best practice.

• Stay updated on emerging trends in sustainability, providing thought leadership within the council and to external stakeholders.
