Project Engineer

 

Description:

Galliford Try is seeking a Pre-Construction Project Engineer to provide and coordinate operational/matrix function input during the pre-contract phase, ensuring robust target cost, risk register, and delivery plans are in place. The role’s focus is to enhance project profitability before substantial design completion and subcontract placement, as well as ensuring a holistic delivery plan prior to site works.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary interface between pre-construction, design, commercial, procurement, matrix, and delivery functions to meet/exceed time, cost, and quality targets.

  • Serve as Design Management Lead under the company’s Business Management System (BMS).

  • Coordinate across designers, clients, supply chain, procurement, and planners to ensure cost-effective delivery of Civil and MEICA elements.

  • Manage the detailed design and procurement phases, ensuring client approval, compliance, and programme efficiency.

  • Drive procurement strategy to maximise value and avoid rushed orders.

  • Oversee early site activities (e.g., surveys, inspections) to support design and delivery planning.

  • Maintain rigorous change control procedures.

  • Ensure all functions (H&S, Quality, Environmental, Commissioning) are involved before site mobilization.

  • Provide a civil and MEICA technical interface with clients.

  • Lead supplier engagement to ensure robust quotation assessment.

  • Promote best practice and continuous improvement throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • “Can do, will do” project delivery mindset.

  • Strong IT and computer skills.

  • Minimum HND/HNC in Engineering (BEng/MEng preferred).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong leadership, organisational, and team player abilities.

  • Proven technical competence with commercial and contractual awareness.

  • Skilled in subcontract and supply chain management.

  • Negotiation and presentation skills.

  • Preferred: IOSH 1-day Working Safely or equivalent certification.
