Description:

Wolters Kluwer Health, a global leader in healthcare publishing and digital solutions, is seeking a visionary and highly accomplished Vice President, Publishing – Health Research to oversee its extensive portfolio of over 350 proprietary and society journal titles. This executive leadership role plays a pivotal part in shaping the future of health and medical publishing, expanding the organization’s reach in Open Access (OA), strengthening strategic partnerships with academic and clinical societies, and driving innovation across digital platforms.

The selected executive will manage a team of approximately 90 professionals across the US, UK, and India, reporting directly to the SVP & GM of Health Research. This role focuses on creating and executing growth strategies, fostering strong partnerships, and ensuring the highest standards in medical and health research content.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Portfolio Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a growth strategy for the medical and health journals portfolio, covering hybrid and full Open Access models.

  • Shape the long-term vision for the division, aligning with global medical research trends, funder mandates, and emerging technologies like GenAI.

  • Drive digital transformation and data-driven decision-making while enhancing researcher-centric services.

  • Increase submission volumes and research article output at a market-leading level.

Open Access Development:

  • Drive sustainable growth in Open Access through strategic journal flipping, launching new OA journals, and providing transparent author services without compromising quality standards.

  • Monitor market dynamics and identify competitive whitespace opportunities for differentiation.

Society Publishing Partnerships:

  • Build and maintain long-term strategic relationships with leading medical and clinical societies.

  • Identify, pitch, and secure new society publishing agreements while ensuring contract renewals, retention, and revenue growth.

  • Offer tailored publishing solutions and analytics to enhance society, author, and editor satisfaction.

Proprietary Portfolio Growth:

  • Launch new high-impact journals in emerging areas of medical research.

  • Acquire established titles or journal families aligned with strategic priorities.

  • Recruit leading editorial boards and top-tier editors to elevate journal impact and visibility.

Leadership & Team Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing global team of Publishing Directors, Publishers, and Editors.

  • Build a collaborative, innovative, and diverse culture across geographies.

  • Align publishing KPIs with broader organizational goals, driving operational and cultural excellence.

  • Partner with product, technology, marketing, and sales leaders to optimize go-to-market (GTM) plans and pricing strategies.

  • Represent Wolters Kluwer at key industry events, society negotiations, and open access forums.

Financial & Operational Management:

  • Deliver financial targets, optimize operational efficiency, and manage multi-million-dollar P&Ls.

  • Partner with editorial, production, marketing, and technology teams to enhance operational excellence and author satisfaction.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred.

  • Minimum 10 years in large-scale publishing and editorial management, with a strong background in proprietary and society journals.

  • Extensive knowledge of global scientific markets, Open Access trends, and strategic acquisitions.

  • Proven success in developing high-performing teams and driving innovative publishing initiatives.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for executive, client, and academic audiences.

  • Strong analytical and data-driven mindset with expertise in leveraging data for strategic decision-making.

  • Ability to travel up to 30% internationally, with a focus on society acquisitions and partnerships.
