An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and enthusiastic Research Assistant to join the Team in the Department of International Public Health. As the first institution of its kind in the world, dedicated to education and research in tropical diseases, it’s an exciting time to join LSTM as we enter our 125th anniversary year in 2023.

The Social Science and Chronic Disease Unit (SSCDU), led by Dr Laura Dean, is committed to supporting the development of person-centred health systems that are inclusive of people affected by chronic disease, disability and mental health conditions. The SSCDU harnesses creative and strategic expertise to deliver exceptionally high-quality technical oversight of a portfolio of large, multi-country, multi-partner research consortia.

The team currently have a number of projects focused on the integration of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and mental health services, including through the REDRESS programme. This role would support the portfolio of work focused on neglected tropical disease whilst contributing to other programmes within the research unit as required.

Key deliverables will include (but not be limited to):

  • Work collaboratively to support on-going health systems research including developing appropriate innovative methodological tools and approaches
  • Contribute to the development of recommendations from research evidence to support the scale up of equitable interventions
  • Improve stakeholder capacity to identify and address research gaps and apply evidence to strengthen health systems
  • Preparing and facilitating workshops in LMICs to support data analysis and training
  • Champion community engagement and patient involvement and collaborate with affected persons and communities

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability and interest in working as an integral and cooperative member of a multi-disciplinary research team. Ideally you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Masters in a health or health-related discipline (such as Public Health, Community Health, Health Policy, development studies, geography, health systems)
  • Knowledge of health systems strengthening
  • Experience in conducting multi-disciplinary implementation research
  • Experience of delivering research training and capacity strengthening activities in a low income setting
  • Qualitative analysis skills
