Description:

The UCL AI Centre invites applications for a Research Fellow in Medical Robotics. This prestigious position is situated within the Surgical Robot Vision (SRV) Research Group under the supervision of Dr. Agostino Stilli, in collaboration with the UCL Hawkes Institute and UCL Robotics Institute. The project is focused on developing and translating novel soft robotic systems for surgical interventions.

Research at the UCL Hawkes Institute spans a broad range of surgical applications including vascular, ophthalmic, neurological, paediatric, and robotic cancer treatments, with a strong emphasis on endoscopic imaging, interventional instrumentation, and surgical navigation.

The role offers a unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment, contributing to cutting-edge research in medical robotics with access to state-of-the-art facilities at Charles Bell House.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct innovative research in soft medical robotics

  • Develop and implement designs for robotic colonoscopy platforms

  • Collaborate with clinicians to ensure medical device functionality and safety

  • Design, prototype, and test hardware systems for clinical and animal trials

  • Independently run experiments and analyse results

  • Present findings at international conferences and in academic journals

  • Participate in public engagement activities

  • Liaise professionally with collaborators and stakeholders

  • Contribute to funding reports and project documentation


Candidate Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

  • PhD (or near completion) in relevant field

  • Strong practical skills in mechatronics and robotics engineering

  • Proven experience in hardware prototyping for robotic/medical systems

  • Hands-on experience in clinical or animal trials preferred

  • Strong publishing record

  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team


Employment Terms:

  • Contract Type: Fixed-term until 12 January 2028

  • Working Pattern: Full-time, Hybrid (min. 80% on-site)
