Description:

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor to join its Traction Systems Rail team in London. This role, based in Canary Wharf, is pivotal to ensuring health, safety, and wellbeing standards are upheld across a portfolio of rail projects throughout London.

The HSW Advisor will play a crucial role in implementing Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm Action Plan, supporting the wider HS&W Strategy, and ensuring project compliance with UK Business Management System (BMS) requirements. The advisor will conduct scheduled site visits, deliver training, monitor performance, investigate incidents, and help develop best practices in safety, environmental risk management, and wellbeing.

This position requires a deep understanding of UK health and safety regulations, strong interpersonal skills, and a passion for promoting a culture of continuous improvement and safe work environments. The advisor will also support sustainability efforts, the supply chain engagement strategy, and contribute to case studies showcasing signature projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation and review of the Zero Harm and Sustainability Action Plans.

  • Conduct health, safety, and environmental inspections and prepare formal reports.

  • Provide expertise in investigating incidents and near misses.

  • Support and deliver HS&W training programs to project teams.

  • Contribute to key performance indicators (KPIs) and work-winning activities.

  • Assist in the development of safe systems of work and HSW case studies.

  • Participate in champion roles and research on innovation and best practices in HSW.

  • Promote prevention principles and effective control measures.

  • Ensure compliance with CDM 2015 regulations and promote engagement with supply chains.

Essential Criteria:

  • NEBOSH Diploma, NCRQ, NVQ Level 6, or equivalent (attained or working towards).

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and foster a positive safety culture.

  • Strong knowledge of the UK Health & Safety regulatory framework and BMS requirements.

  • Proven experience in incident investigation and safety reporting.

  • Excellent communication and engagement skills across all levels.

  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) competence.

  • Broad experience in construction and civil engineering projects.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Graduate Membership of IOSH (GradIOSH) or working toward it.

  • Internal auditor qualification.

  • Knowledge of CDM 2015 roles and responsibilities.

  • Environmental and sustainability-related qualifications.

  • Additional technical qualifications relevant to the role.
