Senior Biomedical Scientist

Description:

The Senior Biomedical Scientist is a full-time, on-site role based in Huntingdon, primarily supporting diagnostic and clinical services within the haematology laboratory in a blood sciences environment. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing and supervising complex biomedical analyses, validating and interpreting results, and ensuring timely, accurate reporting to clinical teams. The role involves overseeing laboratory workflows, maintaining quality standards, supporting accreditation requirements, and promoting safe working practices. The postholder will provide technical and professional leadership to colleagues, contribute to service development and audit activities, and participate in training and mentoring of junior staff and students. Collaboration with clinicians and multidisciplinary teams to optimize diagnostic pathways and improve patient outcomes is a key aspect of this position.

Qualifications

• Strong laboratory skills, including handling specimens, operating diagnostic equipment, and adhering to quality and safety protocols.
• Proficiency in pathology and biomedical sciences, with the ability to interpret complex results and support clinical decision-making.
• Experience in haematology, coagulation, and blood morphology.
• Knowledge of haematological techniques and workflows for identifying and monitoring abmormalities.
• Accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences or a closely related discipline, with professional registration (e.g., HCPC).
• Experience in a senior or supervisory laboratory role, including mentoring, workload management, and supporting staff development.
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems, data integrity, and compliance with national and local standards (e.g., ISO, UKAS, MHRA, NHS policies).
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and under time pressures.
