As a Senior Civil Engineer (Utilities), you will play a pivotal role in leading and developing Mott MacDonald’s utilities capability across a broad portfolio of infrastructure projects within the highways and public transport sectors. This role offers the chance to lead complex, multi-disciplinary design and delivery programmes while influencing the strategic direction of infrastructure utilities management.
Mott MacDonald’s projects span clients such as National Highways, Transport Scotland, Welsh Government, and various Local Authorities and contractors, delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions that enhance transport networks and improve community connectivity.

Lead and manage the design and diversion of utilities as part of major highway and transport infrastructure projects.
Ensure compliance with health and safety policies, the CDM regulations, and relevant engineering codes such as NRSWA, HAUC, and NJUG.
Manage multi-disciplinary design teams and client-facing activities, ensuring delivery excellence.
Identify and implement innovative engineering solutions to minimize utility diversions, optimize costs, and drive project efficiency.
Conduct utility peer reviews for major infrastructure schemes and ensure compliance with utility company standards.
Support business development initiatives, fostering client relationships and contributing to bids and tenders.
Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior and early-career engineers, supporting their professional growth.
Control task programs, manage project budgets, and ensure adherence to project timelines and quality standards.
Present technical reports and advice to clients, stakeholders, and project partners.
Promote collaboration, innovation, and digital excellence through the adoption of new tools and methods such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Navisworks, and ProjectWise.
Essential Requirements:
Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification (HNC/HND) in a related discipline.
Professional membership in a relevant institution (e.g. ICE, MCIHT).
Strong experience in the delivery of utilities design and diversion in major infrastructure or highway projects.
Proven understanding of NRSWA processes (C2–C9 stages) and compliance with utility standards.
Experience managing multi-disciplinary interfaces from feasibility through to detailed design and construction.
Demonstrated knowledge of CDM regulations and the ability to positively influence safety culture.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, with the ability to deliver projects to tight schedules and demanding targets.
Desirable Skills:
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
Experience with engineering contracts (e.g. NEC3 and NEC4).
Familiarity with digital design tools including Navisworks, Autodesk Infraworks, Bentley Open Roads, and ProjectWise.
Understanding of UK highway design codes and standards such as DMRB and the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works.
Willingness to travel within the UK or internationally for short assignments.
