Munich Re, a leading global reinsurance and risk management company, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Application Lead Developer to join its Digital Underwriting Global Technology Team in Manchester. This critical leadership role focuses on designing, developing, and delivering scalable, secure, and cloud-optimized solutions using Microsoft Azure to support digital transformation and innovation within the company’s underwriting operations.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across global teams, mentor developers, conduct code reviews, and lead collaborative design workshops. You will play a key role in developing modern cloud-based applications that enhance Munich Re’s underwriting capabilities, including risk modelling, claims processing, and actuarial analysis systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, secure, and high-performance services for Digital Underwriting systems such as risk modelling and claims management.

  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code following best practices and quality standards.

  • Design, implement, and manage Microsoft Azure solutions, focusing on Container and App Services/Functions.

  • Utilize Databricks for advanced data modelling, ETL processes, transformation, and analytics to support actuarial and pricing models.

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps to ensure seamless delivery of critical applications.

  • Implement cloud security best practices in compliance with insurance regulatory standards.

  • Optimize Azure resources for performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Mentor junior developers, fostering technical excellence and continuous learning within the team.

  • Conduct comprehensive code reviews to maintain high-quality coding standards and performance.

  • Facilitate and lead technical design workshops with cross-functional teams, including actuaries, data scientists, and IT architects.

  • Collaborate closely with global IT and business teams to deliver innovative and strategic technical solutions aligned with Munich Re’s goals.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 7–10+ years of experience in software development, including leadership roles.

  • Strong knowledge of insurance/reinsurance processes, such as underwriting, risk assessment, claims, or actuarial modelling.

  • Advanced proficiency in TypeScript for building robust, scalable applications.

  • Hands-on experience with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and containerized environments.

  • Expertise in Databricks for data engineering, modelling, and analytics.

  • Proven experience in DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and Azure DevOps tools.

  • Deep technical understanding of Microsoft Azure services, including compute, networking, and security.

  • Demonstrated success in implementing cloud security and compliance strategies tailored to insurance regulations.

  • Strong leadership and mentorship experience, guiding teams and elevating technical standards.

  • Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Fluency in English required; German language proficiency is an advantage.
