Enfield Council is seeking a Senior Road Safety Engineer to join its Healthy Streets Team within the Department of Environment and Communities. This role plays a vital part in shaping Enfield’s ambition to create safer, healthier, and more sustainable streets through the Journeys and Places programme.

As part of the council’s broader commitment to Vision Zero and sustainable transport, the Senior Road Safety Engineer will lead the road safety components of transport and infrastructure projects from conception through delivery. The position offers the chance to directly influence street design and improve the safety and quality of life for Enfield’s communities.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled and forward-thinking professional to play a central role in making Enfield’s transport infrastructure safer, more efficient, and more people-focused.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead on all road safety elements of transport and street improvement projects from concept through to completion.

  • Ensure all schemes comply with national and local standards while aligning with Enfield’s Vision Zero and Healthy Streets principles.

  • Conduct and oversee Road Safety Audits (RSA) and analyse road traffic collision data to develop safety-focused interventions.

  • Collaborate with transport planners, engineers, and engagement teams to ensure safety is embedded in project design and delivery.

  • Provide expert technical advice on road safety issues and engineering principles throughout project lifecycles.

  • Work directly with key stakeholders including Transport for London (TfL), the Metropolitan Police, and local community groups.

  • Support the council’s policy and programme development by offering data-driven insights into safety performance and design standards.

  • Contribute to building and implementing frameworks for consistent, evidence-based road safety practice across the borough.

  • Continuously review and improve road safety policies, processes, and design standards within the department.

  • Promote a safety-first culture in all road and transport planning initiatives.


Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Proven professional experience in road safety engineering within a local authority, consultancy, or transport organisation.

  • Strong knowledge of collision analysis, RSA processes, and relevant UK traffic safety policies.

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering, or a related field.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate technical information into practical recommendations.

  • Sound professional judgement and decision-making aligned with strategic transport and safety objectives.

  • Commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and community-focused transport design.


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: £46968 - £50085 per year (approx. £3914 - £4173 per month)

  • Pension: Excellent pension scheme through the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)

  • Annual Leave: Up to 32 days (depending on grade and service) + 8 public holidays + 1 extra day off at Christmas
