Senior Staff Backend Engineer

Description:

Monzo Bank is looking for a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to join its Growth collective, a high-impact team responsible for driving new user acquisition in one of the UK’s fastest-growing digital banks. This role offers the opportunity to technically lead backend architecture and engineering strategy across multiple squads (~20 engineers), contributing directly to the company’s strategic goals.

You’ll guide teams through solving complex systems problems while ensuring data-driven decision-making and prioritisation. Your work will span everything from architectural design to hands-on coding, always optimising for business impact over lines of code.

This is a remote-friendly position (within the UK), with visa sponsorship and relocation support available for exceptional candidates. The Growth team at Monzo operates as a cross-functional environment, collaborating with marketing, product, data, and engineering to unlock customer value through rapid experimentation and system optimisation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide technical leadership across multiple backend engineering squads

• Collaborate with senior engineering managers, product, and data leads to define and execute strategy

• Lead architectural discussions and oversee design of complex distributed systems

• Drive technical decision-making, mentoring, and quality assurance across teams

• Balance speed of delivery with long-term system robustness and performance

• Guide use of data and experimentation to validate growth hypotheses

• Foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement

Tech Stack (experience not mandatory):

• Go (Golang) for backend application code

• Cassandra for persistent data storage

• Kafka for asynchronous messaging

• Kubernetes and Docker for service orchestration

• AWS (production infrastructure) and GCP (data infrastructure)

• Feast, GPT, Vertex models for ML/LLM capabilities

• React (for internal support tooling)

Candidate Requirements:

• Proven experience leading backend engineering at scale, especially in user acquisition, marketing tech, or growth-focused environments

• Experience technically guiding 3–4 engineering squads on complex optimisation challenges

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with non-technical stakeholders, including at the senior level

• Ability to handle both strategic planning and hands-on development

• Passionate about building resilient systems with real-world impact
