Description:
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking nurse to join the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme as a Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP). The programme invites men and women aged 50-74 to complete an at-home Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), and offers follow-up colonoscopy if required. The service also caters to Lynch Surveillance patients.
This role is ideal for nurses who are passionate about bowel cancer screening, committed to clinical excellence, and eager to expand their specialist knowledge in the field.
Key Responsibilities:
Act as a role model for clinical practice, professional behaviour, and standards of care
Contribute to local clinical networks and specialty-specific groups, collaborating with other healthcare professionals
Participate in shared learning and maintain professional registration through Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Assess participants’ suitability and fitness for screening via nurse-led clinics, requesting alternative investigations where appropriate
Provide psychological support and communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and carers, including breaking bad news
Act as Key Worker for participants with detected cancer or malignant polyps
Deliver follow-up nurse-led clinics both face-to-face and via telephone
Participate in Screening Quality Assurance Service visits, auditing and addressing any anomalies
Promote skills and knowledge sharing within the screening centre and wider screening community
Training Requirements:
Must have completed or be willing to complete the mandatory Liverpool JMU SSP course within 12 months of appointment
Undertake BCSS training as required for all SSPs
