Description:
Bruker, a global leader in high-performance scientific instruments and analytical solutions, is seeking an Electron Microscope Staff Scientist to be embedded within the Materials Science Department at Cambridge University. The role focuses on advancing structure determination methods for beam-sensitive organic and biological materials using electron diffraction and 4D STEM techniques. The candidate will operate a Nion UltraSTEM microscope and collaborate closely with Prof. Paul Midgely, Bruker’s UK and US EM teams, and other Cambridge researchers.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary expert user of the Nion UltraSTEM microscope in the Wolfson Electron Microscopy Suite.
Provide practical guidance and training to microscope users.
Collaborate with Bruker R&D teams to develop new methods like Micro Electron Diffraction (microED) and 4D STEM.
Support diffraction-based experiments with Cambridge University researchers.
Ensure smooth operation and maintenance of the microscope alongside university support staff.
Stay updated with the latest developments in electron diffraction, STEM, and crystallography.
Become an expert in Nion Swift microscope software and provide feedback for user interface improvements.
Proactively suggest innovative methodologies in electron diffraction.
Qualifications:
Key:
PhD in physics or materials science with hands-on experience in electron diffraction and crystallography.
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Deep understanding of electron microscopy instrumentation.
Proven ability to obtain high-quality results from complex instruments.
Drive to complete projects successfully and tackle new challenges.
Desirable:
Extensive experience with Nion microscopes.
Knowledge of 4D-STEM, ptychography, and microED techniques.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities under strict deadlines.
Effective communication with colleagues from varied backgrounds.
Practical skills in sample preparation for electron microscopy.
Willingness to travel internationally for training and collaboration.
