Description:
The Soil Association is seeking a highly knowledgeable and experienced Aquaculture Representative to serve on its independent Standards Board, which oversees the strategy and development of UK and EU organic farming, food, and aquaculture standards. This voluntary, non-executive role provides a unique opportunity to influence the future of organic aquaculture and ensure standards remain pioneering yet practical.
The selected candidate will represent the aquaculture sector, bringing deep practical expertise in organic aquaculture, including farmed salmon, fin fish, bivalves, and seaweed production. The role involves advising on strategic objectives for aquaculture, reviewing the impact of standards, and potentially chairing specialist task groups. With the Soil Association at a critical stage in advancing its high-profile organic farmed salmon standards, this role offers the chance to make a significant impact on environmental sustainability, fish welfare, and legislative influence.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge, a clear and analytical mindset, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and an independent, solutions-focused perspective. Familiarity with committee work, policy impact evaluation, or multi-stakeholder engagement is desirable.
Key Responsibilities:
Represent the aquaculture sector in the Soil Association Standards Board.
Advise on mandates, strategies, and standards development for organic aquaculture.
Review and assess the impact of current and proposed standards.
Chair specialist aquaculture working groups as required.
Support the continued development of higher aquaculture standards and influence related legislation.
Collaborate with diverse stakeholders to ensure standards are effective, sustainable, and forward-looking.
Essential Requirements:
Practical experience in organic aquaculture and related sectors.
Independent, clear-thinking decision-making ability.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Alignment with the Soil Association’s mission for sustainable, organic farming and environmental protection.
Desirable Skills:
Committee work or governance experience.
Knowledge of project or standards impact monitoring.
