Student Counsellor

 

Description:

Direction is currently expanding its services and seeking a Volunteer Student Counsellor to join its dedicated and friendly team in Edinburgh. This is an ideal opportunity for a student counsellor who is currently undergoing professional training and wishes to gain valuable hands-on counselling experience in a supportive and ethical practice environment. The role will involve offering therapeutic support to clients through both face-to-face and remote sessions.

This position is volunteer-based and requires a part-time commitment of at least 3 hours per week, including one evening. It offers a rich learning environment for personal and professional growth while contributing to the wellbeing of clients in a highly respected counselling setting.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counselling or psychotherapy services to individuals both face-to-face in Edinburgh and online via TEAMS/Zoom or telephone

  • Commit to a minimum of 3 hours per week, including availability for 2 evening hours weekly

  • Maintain GDPR-compliant records for client contact and session documentation

  • Liaise effectively with other members of the direction team

  • Accurately record client session notes and manage personal data in line with internal policies

  • Be willing to travel to Edinburgh City Centre for face-to-face appointments


Candidate Requirements:

Essential Attributes:

  • Currently enrolled in a Diploma, Degree, or Postgraduate Counselling/Psychotherapy program

  • Working towards professional membership with BACP and/or COSCA, following their ethical frameworks

  • High ethical standards of practice with excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and professionally with minimum supervision

  • Demonstrated commitment to client care and continuous learning

  • Must hold Professional Indemnity Insurance

  • Must be able to provide evidence of current Supervision, CPD (Continuing Professional Development), and course attendance

  • Competency with computers, online appointment platforms, and digital client management tools
