Supreme Court Justice

Description:

The UK Supreme Court is inviting applications for the prestigious position of Justice of the Supreme Court, following the upcoming retirement of Lord Richards in June 2026. This position represents one of the most senior and intellectually challenging judicial roles in the United Kingdom, offering an opportunity to shape and influence the development of law across all four nations — England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

As a Justice of the Supreme Court, you will play a central role in hearing and deciding upon complex, high-profile, and often constitutionally significant legal appeals that impact not only the UK but also jurisdictions beyond. The role demands exceptional legal intellect, deep analytical ability, and an unwavering commitment to fairness, impartiality, and the principles of justice.

The appointed Justice will join a distinguished panel of judges responsible for interpreting the law at the highest level. In addition to adjudicative responsibilities, the role involves engagement in wider judicial leadership, representing the Court domestically and internationally, and contributing to the continued integrity and evolution of the UK’s constitutional framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hear and adjudicate on major legal appeals presented to the UK Supreme Court and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

  • Demonstrate exceptional intellectual, analytical, and decision-making abilities.

  • Contribute to the collegiate decision-making process of the Court.

  • Provide thought leadership on complex issues involving constitutional, corporate, and equity law.

  • Represent the Supreme Court in its public and institutional engagements within the UK and abroad.

  • Promote and embody the Court’s values of fairness, impartiality, and judicial independence.

  • Support diversity and inclusivity within the judiciary, contributing to a modern, representative Court.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Outstanding legal intellect and proven record of judicial or equivalent high-level legal practice.

  • Substantial experience and expertise in equity and corporate law.

  • Profound understanding of the laws and legal systems of the United Kingdom’s four constituent nations.

  • Strong capacity for collegiate, consensus-based decision-making.

  • Sensitivity to the needs and diversity of various communities and groups.

  • Ability to engage in the representational and leadership aspects of the role.

  • Demonstrated appreciation for the evolving constitutional and legal landscape of the UK.

Diversity & Inclusion:

The UK Supreme Court is deeply committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion. Applicants from all backgrounds and communities are strongly encouraged to apply. The Court supports part-time and flexible working arrangements, subject to operational requirements.
