Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), one of the largest pension schemes in the UK with over £75.5 billion in assets, is hiring a Tax Manager to join its Finance team based in London. This full-time, on-site permanent role offers an excellent opportunity to play a central role in tax compliance and advisory matters within a dynamic, large-scale financial institution serving over 528,000 members across 330 employers in higher education.
In this role, the Tax Manager will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely tax compliance and reporting across multiple jurisdictions, liaising with HMRC, providing technical guidance on various tax areas, and contributing to advisory and project-based work. The successful candidate will be integral in managing tax risks, refining processes, and working closely with stakeholders across the organization and external partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with internal teams and external advisors to manage corporation tax, VAT, partnership tax, and compliance reporting across jurisdictions.
Engage with HMRC on compliance matters and technical queries.
Support day-to-day tax risk management and operational tax strategy for USS investments.
Provide technical input on corporation tax, income tax, VAT, CIS, employment, and pension taxes.
Liaise with Investment Accounting, Operations, and custodians to ensure appropriate tax treatment.
Identify and implement process improvements in tax reporting and accounting systems.
Assist in advisory work and projects related to investment tax and cross-functional finance initiatives.
Build strong relationships internally and externally, representing the Tax team across business areas.
Candidate Requirements:
Professional accounting or tax qualification.
Degree-level education or equivalent experience.
Experience in tax compliance, ideally with exposure to advisory responsibilities.
Knowledge of UK GAAP / IFRS and the UK tax system.
Familiarity with international tax principles and operational taxes.
Strong Excel and analytical skills.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building abilities.
