Description:
Booker, the UK’s leading food and drink wholesaler, is seeking an experienced Transport Operations Manager to lead and oversee transport operations at its Hemel Hempstead distribution centre. This key leadership role will report directly to the General Manager and manage a team including drivers, trainers, managers, and admin staff, operating a fleet of Class 1 and Class 2 vehicles.
You will play a pivotal role in managing performance, ensuring legal compliance, optimising costs, and developing a strong, people-first departmental culture. As part of the site’s senior management team, you'll be instrumental in strategic planning, team leadership, and operational excellence.
Manage and achieve the transport department’s budget and KPIs
Ensure compliance with DVSA regulations and internal/external audit requirements
Motivate, coach, and develop transport staff, recognising and addressing both strong and weak performance
Maintain and optimise driver scheduling, agency use, and repair/maintenance costs
Track and report on KPIs weekly; produce action plans for continuous improvement
Implement strategies to reduce fuel consumption and improve KPL (kilometres per litre)
Foster a positive, inclusive culture and create a “Great Place to Work” environment
Ensure adherence to employment laws, including grievance and disciplinary processes
Build productive relationships with union reps and support ER (employee relations) strategies
Develop succession plans and identify training needs across the team
Deliver outstanding on-time delivery performance and customer communication
CPC Qualification (Essential)
Management experience in a unionised, fast-paced logistics setting
Strong PC and analytical/reporting skills
Sound knowledge of health & safety, people planning, scheduling, and compliance procedures
Familiarity with contract employment, disciplinary action, grievance protocols
Flexible, self-driven, and proactive with a hands-on leadership style
Excellent communicator with ability to influence at all levels
Organised and methodical with strong decision-making and judgment skills
Resilient, adaptable, and open to change and innovation
Strong team player and collaborator
Ability to motivate and build high-performing teams
