Description:

Markel International, part of the Fortune 500 Markel Group with over 60 offices across 20+ countries, is seeking an Underwriter – War and Terrorism to join its London-based War and Terrorism Division. This role is integral to delivering superior underwriting results, supporting divisional growth, and ensuring that business is underwritten in line with the group’s strategic and operational goals.

The successful candidate will contribute to underwriting strategies, develop strong broker and client relationships, and actively identify new business opportunities across international markets. The division underwrites risks worldwide in areas including Hull, Cargo, War, Specie, Liability, and Terrorism, with a reputation for technical accuracy and leadership in these sectors.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with senior underwriters, management, and actuarial teams to implement and monitor underwriting strategy.

  • Exercise sound and prudent underwriting judgment to deliver profitable results.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients, attending regular meetings and representing Markel internationally as required.

  • Proactively seek and assess new business opportunities.

  • Apply underwriting practices aligned with authority, guidelines, and risk management frameworks, ensuring aggregation and exposure are carefully monitored.

  • Contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team environment by supporting peers and influencing strategic direction.

Essential Requirements:

  • Proven wholesale and retail underwriting expertise in war and terrorism.

  • Strong track record of achieving superior underwriting results.

  • In-depth understanding of related areas including claims, actuarial processes, product development, compliance, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Strong analytical and numerical ability, with excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a matrixed, fast-paced environment with high energy and proactive initiative.

  • Established professional network of London and international brokers and distribution partners.
