Witness Care Officer

 

Description:

Devon and Cornwall Police is seeking a Witness Care Officer to join their dedicated team based at Plymouth Crown Court. The primary responsibility of this role is to act as a single point of contact for victims and witnesses in prosecution cases, ensuring their attendance in Magistrates and Crown Courts and providing high-quality support in line with the No Witness No Justice initiative and the Victim’s Code of Practice.

This is an important role where you will directly influence the willingness of victims and witnesses to attend court by delivering tailored support and guidance, while managing varied and complex caseloads. The position offers the chance to make a meaningful difference to people’s experiences within the criminal justice system while working collaboratively with external agencies and internal teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct, review, and regularly assess needs and risk assessments for victims and witnesses.

  • Provide tailored support, advice, and guidance to ensure witness attendance at court.

  • Manage varied caseloads across different stages of prosecution.

  • Ensure compliance with the Victim’s Code, Witness Charter, and Force policies.

  • Maintain accurate and timely case records, including intelligence and unseen crime.

  • Collaborate and build strong relationships with partner agencies such as CPS, HMCTS, Witness Services, and victim support agencies.

  • Contribute to effective service provision by supporting local practices and multi-agency working.

Skills & Attributes Required:

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage complex and varied workloads.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, with sensitivity when dealing with victims and witnesses.

  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and relevant legislation (Victims Code, Witness Charter).

  • Ability to maintain accurate records and case management systems.

  • Collaborative and team-oriented approach, with the ability to develop effective relationships with partners.

  • Flexible, empathetic, and resilient, with the ability to work under pressure.
