The team has a multi-dimensional impact, from helping avoid legal exposure to collaborating with other functions to help them achieve their strategic objectives within the legal and regulatory framework.

How You Will Create An Impact

AIG’s Global Personal Insurance Legal Department within GLCR is seeking an experienced and confident Assistant General Counsel to support the growth and success of AIG’s Global Personal Insurance business (including Accident & Health and Warranty Service Programs). Based in either London or Singapore, the Assistant General Counsel will lead projects that are time-sensitive, highly visible inside and outside of the company, and key to AIG’s strategic initiatives.

You will report into the Head of Global Personal Insurance Legal, UK & EMEA and partner with the Personal Insurance business units in the UK, EMEA and APAC. This role will require close collaboration with other attorneys in GLCR and functions across the organisation, to achieve legal and regulatory compliance on a wide variety of initiatives and objectives.

Some Key Responsibilities Will Include

 

  • Provide comprehensive legal support to AIG’s Personal Insurance businesses and support them in executing on compliant strategies to achieve their business objectives;
  • Coordinate with the various COEs in GLCR including regulatory, compliance, governance, employment, litigation, reinsurance, product underwriting, data/digital and other areas covered by a COE as issues in those areas arise;
  • Anticipate and advise on a wide variety of legal and regulatory risks associated with AIG’s Personal Insurance operations in the UK, EMEA and APAC;
  • Provide practical advice on optimal pan-jurisdictional insurance distribution structures and other outsourcing arrangements and assist with all legal due diligence;
  • Provide advice on agency and other distribution issues, remuneration arrangements, distance sales, and associated areas of law;
  • Draft and review a wide range of agreements with both licensed and unlicensed partners, including, but not limited to, Delegated Underwriting Authority Agreements, Multi-Jurisdictional Distribution Agreements, Claims Handling Agreements, Terms of Business Agreements, Broker Engagements, Facilities, Fees for Services contracts and Vendor agreements;
  • Provide advice on product-related legal matters, including the review of policy wordings, customer documents, marketing materials, customer/client communications and sales journeys, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Manage regulatory requests, notifications and other filings, including escalated complaints, related to Personal Insurance, in collaboration with the relevant Regulatory team;
  • Retain and manage instructions with panel firms and external counsel on relevant legal matters;
  • Oversee the work provided by trainees or secondees;
  • Assist on ad hoc projects as required;
  • Provide technical training to the Business teams, with a focus on developing legal and regulatory knowledge and awareness; and
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the organisation.
     

What You’ll Need To Succeed

 

  • A UK qualified lawyer in good standing with a minimum of 5 years of legal experience with a major law firm or a global insurer
  • Strong understanding of the business of insurance and insurance regulation, including distribution
  • Demonstrated experience leading deals and closing contracts within aggressive timeframes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects and assignments in a fast-paced environment with a strong focus on collaboration as well as independently
  • Ability to handle confidential information with high level of discretion
