Description:
Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society, located in the heart of Europe’s largest dark sky park in Northumberland, is expanding its dynamic team and seeking a full-time Astronomer and Science Communicator. This is a unique opportunity to become part of an inspiring public outreach organization that brings the wonders of the universe to thousands of people through engaging live events, school programs, community outreach, and digital content.
The successful candidate will join a small but dedicated core team of 15 staff, working alongside 40 volunteers. This role is focused on science communication and public engagement, where passion and the ability to inspire diverse audiences are more important than formal academic qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver engaging astronomy events, including observatory tours, stargazing sessions, and educational talks on-site at Kielder and off-site across the UK.
Present content with clarity and enthusiasm to a wide range of audiences, including schools, community groups, and the general public.
Host events during evenings (often ending after midnight) and participate in daytime and variable-schedule outreach programs.
Contribute to science communication content including written articles, social media posts, podcasts, and video production using in-house tools.
Participate in regular professional development with dedicated annual training budgets and allocated CPD time (up to 10% of work schedule).
Candidate Profile:
A passion for astronomy and the ability to communicate complex ideas in an accessible and exciting manner.
Strong public speaking and performance skills.
Experience in or enthusiasm for science communication through diverse formats (live events, media, writing, etc.).
Willingness to work variable hours and travel occasionally for outreach activities.
Interest in contributing to a charitable, impact-driven organization that transforms lives through educational engagement.
