Description:
Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol A.R.C) — one of Bristol’s oldest and most cherished charities — is seeking a dedicated and visionary Chairperson to lead its Board of Trustees through an exciting new chapter in its long history.
For over 135 years, Bristol A.R.C has been at the heart of the community, providing compassion, care, and rehabilitation to thousands of animals in need. Through its Rescue Centre, Veterinary Clinic, and Rehoming Services, the organisation has supported countless animals and their owners across Bristol, ensuring every creature receives the respect and love it deserves.
Now, as the charity prepares for a major relocation and redevelopment project — moving from its historic Albert Road site (home since 1901) — Bristol A.R.C. seeks a new Chair to help guide this transformational journey. The role will play a central part in the charity’s strategic direction, governance, and fundraising initiatives to secure a new home and ensure a sustainable future for its vital work.
Lead the Board of Trustees, fostering collaboration, transparency, and effective decision-making.
Provide strategic oversight and guidance to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and senior management team.
Support the organisation in its site relocation project, including property acquisition, planning, and development.
Help shape and deliver the fundraising strategy to enable the successful move and expansion.
Ensure strong governance and compliance in line with charity law and organisational best practices.
Act as an ambassador for Bristol A.R.C., building partnerships with key stakeholders, donors, and the wider community.
Chair approximately six board meetings annually, along with the AGM and oversight of key committees (e.g., Remuneration Committee, Finance Committee).
Contribute to the long-term mission of animal rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming, championing compassion and welfare.
The ideal candidate will bring strategic insight, strong leadership skills, and a passion for animal welfare. You’ll be ready to guide the organisation through significant change while maintaining stability and governance excellence.
Essential Qualities and Experience:
Board or senior executive leadership experience (preferably within charity, property, or development contexts).
Understanding of governance, compliance, and fiduciary responsibilities.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and inspire others.
Experience in property, construction, or large-scale development projects is particularly desirable.
A commitment to Bristol A.R.C’s mission, values, and community impact.
Approximately 6 meetings per year, plus AGM and committee oversight (e.g., Finance, Remuneration).
Additional engagement as required during key project milestones and strategy reviews.
Founded in 1887, Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol A.R.C) has supported the city’s animals for more than a century. It provides veterinary services, rescue and rehoming support, and outreach programs to improve animal welfare and education.
As the charity prepares to relocate from its Albert Road site — surrounded by new developments in the St Philip’s Marsh area — it faces both challenges and opportunities to redefine its facilities and enhance its services for decades to come.
Bristol A.R.C operates as the working name for two linked charities: The Bristol Dogs and Cats Home and the RSPCA Bristol and District Branch.
