Civil Litigation Lawyer

Description:

Cathedral Appointments is seeking an experienced Civil Litigation Lawyer to join their Tier 1-ranked Marine Team based in Plymouth. This is a full-time, hybrid role with parking facilities and occasional remote working. The position is ideal for litigation professionals looking to transition into marine law, as prior marine-sector experience is not essential and full support will be provided.

You will advise a broad range of clients, including UK and international marine insurers, shipowners, ports, yacht clubs, and the fishing industry, on complex and high-value civil litigation matters. These may include marine insurance disputes, defence claims, personal injury cases, salvage and collision claims, and surveyors' negligence. You will also assist with ship arrest/detention and regulatory prosecutions, such as those brought by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Marine Management Organisation (MMO).

The Marine Team is known for its progressive and industry-integrated approach—many team members pursue sailing qualifications and even training as commercial fishermen to deepen their understanding and credibility within the industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a wide range of civil litigation matters within the marine sector

  • Handle claims involving insurance, personal injury, salvage, negligence, and shipping casualties

  • Participate in regulatory defence cases, including criminal prosecutions and fisheries offences

  • Use Alternative Dispute Resolution and mediation techniques to resolve disputes

  • Work with clients from the marine insurance sector, shipping companies, harbours, and the fishing industry

  • Represent the department at industry events and international expos

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with both new and existing clients

  • Engage in business development and sector networking

  • Enthusiastic about professional development and career progression
