Description:

North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) is offering an exciting fixed-term Consultant Anaesthetist role at Southmead Hospital. The successful candidate will work in a highly specialised, multidisciplinary environment supporting a broad range of clinical services including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, obstetrics, plastics, and regional anaesthesia.

This post offers a varied programme tailored to the candidate's subspecialty interests and expertise, with exposure to cutting-edge technologies and techniques. The anaesthesia department is ACSA-accredited and currently undergoing re-accreditation.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide anaesthetic services across multiple specialties based on clinical expertise and interest

  • Participate in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care, including regional anaesthesia

  • Engage with specialist services such as stroke thrombectomy, major trauma, complex orthopaedics, bariatrics, and the Bristol Urology Institute

  • Contribute to teaching, research, and clinical audit

  • Comply with revalidation, clinical governance, and participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives

  • Vascular Network and Endovascular Services

  • Colorectal Centre (ERAS-focused)

  • Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Clinics

  • Complex Elective Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery

  • Major Trauma Centre

  • Neurosurgery with unique UK-wide treatments

  • 24/7 Stroke Thrombectomy

  • Plastics and Burns Unit

  • Obstetric Unit (6500 deliveries annually)

  • Bariatrics, Breast Care Centre, and Integrated Pre-Operative Services


Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree

  • Full GMC Registration

  • CCT in Anaesthesia or within 6 months of achieving it by the interview date

Desirable:

  • MD, MS, or equivalent higher academic qualification

  • Teaching qualifications

  • European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia

Experience:

  • Minimum 6 years post-graduate, including at least 3 years in approved registrar posts

  • Familiarity with UK hospital systems and standards

  • Experience in sub-specialties such as regional, obstetric, neuro, POAC, and general anaesthesia

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication

  • Effective team leadership

  • Proven teaching experience

  • Audit and research involvement

  • Knowledge of NHS systems and management practices
