Data Centre Technician

 

Description:

LMG is seeking a Data Centre Technician to join their team, working alongside site teams and clients to manage day-to-day faults and requests. The role involves providing support on a wide range of systems throughout the Data Centre, performing tasks from simple cabling requests to more complex kit moves. You'll use LMG’s bespoke systems to maintain accurate and up-to-date data while ensuring excellent customer service and communication.

The role requires flexibility, as you will be required to engage with clients, contractors, and team members while handling a variety of technical issues. An ability to work autonomously, strong organisational skills, and a motivated attitude are essential. The position involves regular administrative duties, troubleshooting, and overseeing equipment installations, all while adhering to LMG’s processes and client guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Installation, decommissioning, and design of structured cabling, including termination and patching.

  • Troubleshooting and testing structured cabling using Fluke equipment, ensuring all certification is in place.

  • Assist with hardware installations (e.g., server switches, floor-standing cabinets).

  • Provide out-of-hours support for clients, including hardware installations, troubleshooting, or escorting duties.

  • Carry out essential data centre maintenance tasks, including cabinet, PDU, and containment modifications.

  • Perform data entry and administration tasks using platforms such as ServiceNow, Microsoft Office 365, and SmartView.

  • Update and maintain data centre site stock lists and ensure materials are ordered when necessary.

  • Conduct site induction for visitors and contractors, ensuring adherence to regulations.

  • Regular checks of cabinet security locks and staging areas.

  • Maintain high levels of client communication, ensuring approvals are obtained before tasks are carried out.

Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:

  • Valid ECS/CSCS Card.

  • Relevant qualification (e.g., CNet CNCI®, CNet CNIT®, BICSI Installer Level 2/3, or an equivalent).

  • Full, clean driving licence.

Desirable:

  • First Aid qualification (preferred).

  • Minimum 5 A*-C GCSE's, including Maths and English.

Experience:
Essential:

  • Practical experience in a similar role.

  • Experience with copper and fibre ICT cabling systems.

  • General understanding of Data Centre services and infrastructure.

  • Knowledge of M&E (Power Distribution and Cooling) within Data Centres.

Desirable:

  • Awareness of Audio Visual, Electronic Security, IoT, and Wired & Wireless Network architecture.

  • Basic understanding of change management processes.

  • Experience working within strict timeframes to meet change windows.
