Description:
The Head of Medical Services will be responsible for the clinical governance and management of the medical department as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will lead the injury prevention and rehabilitation process by setting high standards of medical care and player welfare as you deliver comprehensive injury support and elite-level management of first team players.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the medical department in line with club objectives and KPIs.
- Act as clinical governance lead, ensuring adherence to medical standards and protocols.
- Provide comprehensive injury assessments and clinical diagnoses based on sound medical and ethical judgement to support the health, fitness and well-being of first team players.
- Develop and implement injury prevention and rehabilitation programmes tailored to individual player needs.
- Liaise with club doctors on cases requiring specialist referrals or scans.
- Refer players to external medical professionals or consultants as appropriate and manage ongoing communication regarding their care.
- Provide pitch-side medical cover during training sessions and matches.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all players.
- Collaborate with the performance team to facilitate player return-to-play strategies.
- Provide timely communication with coaching and performance staff regarding player injury status.
- Manage the medical suite and its equipment, ensuring high standards of professionalism and appropriate physiotherapy and medical supply stores.
- Oversee budgetary spend on consumables and medical supplies.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant RFU and World Rugby regulations, standards, and ethical practices.
Key Performance Indicators:
· Improvement towards reducing the number of training days missed through injury.
· RFU medical audit feedback, including quality of medical notes on Kit Man Labs.
· Feedback from players/ stake holders on quality of service provided.
Essential Requirements
- BSc (Hons) or MSc degree in Physiotherapy or Sports Therapy
- Must be HCPC and CSP registration or BASRaT (as applicable).
- RFU PHICIS Level 3 qualification or ability to obtain.
- Proven leadership and experience managing a medical team.
- Full UK driving licence and access to own car.
- Ability to work unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Eligible to work in the UK.
- Enhanced DBS clearance.
Desirable Requirements
- Post-graduate qualification in sport physiotherapy or sport science.
- Experience working in a full-time sporting environment.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in elite sport.
- Minimum 3 – 5 years postgraduate musculoskeletal experience.
- Previous experience in elite-level rugby.
