Journal Production Coordinator

 

Description:

The Journal Production Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the production performance and overall health of an allocated portfolio of approximately 70–80 journals. You will monitor copyflow, publication schedules and portfolio risks, acting as a key point of contact and escalation when issues arise.

You will work closely with external supplier project managers, as well as colleagues across peer review, commissioning and publishing, to help keep articles and issues progressing to publication. You will also identify opportunities to improve processes and ways of working across your portfolio. 

Job Responsibilities
 

  • Oversee the production performance of an allocated portfolio of journals, monitoring publication schedules, copyflow and portfolio health.
  • Identify delays, low copy, pipeline issues and other risks, working with relevant internal teams and supplier partners to resolve them.
  • Act as a key point of contact and escalation for production-related issues across your portfolio.
  • Work closely with external supplier project managers, providing guidance and support to help maintain agreed schedules, quality and consistency.
  • Maintain accurate journal, article and issue information across relevant systems.
  • Build effective working relationships with colleagues across peer review, commissioning, publishing, authors and editors.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows and processes, and contribute to continuous improvement activity across the production team.
     

Required Qualifications
 

  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage a large portfolio, competing priorities and multiple deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the confidence to take ownership of issues and work with others to resolve them.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-management skills, including the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good attention to detail alongside the ability to understand the wider performance of a portfolio.
  • Ability to interpret data and reports to identify issues, trends and priorities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, and the ability to learn new systems and processes.
     

Preferred Qualifications
 

  • Experience within publishing, journal production, content operations or another relevant environment.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of publications, projects or other deadline-driven work.
  • Experience working with external suppliers, vendors or outsourced teams.
  • Experience supporting or coaching colleagues or external partners.
  • Experience identifying or contributing to workflow and process improvements.
  • Knowledge of academic or scholarly publishing.
