Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Description:

The University of Sussex is seeking a Research Fellow in Experimental Quantum Technology to join a cutting-edge project within the EPSRC Quantum Technology Hub: Quantum Computing via Integrated and Interconnected Implementations. Led by Dr Matthias Keller, the project aims to merge trapped-ion and photon-based approaches to create a distributed quantum network.

You will work on testing and characterising a multi-zone ion trap with integrated cavity-QED ion-photon interfaces, developing novel ion-photon entanglement schemes, and eventually establishing a basic quantum network.

Key Responsibilities:

• Test and characterise the multi-zone ion trap system

• Implement and optimise an efficient ion-photon interface

• Set up, operate, and maintain complex optical systems with diode lasers, ultra-high vacuum apparatus, and control electronics

• Simulate and test ion-photon entanglement schemes

• Support development of a second system for distributed quantum networking

Required Skills & Experience:

• PhD in experimental quantum information, laser physics, or atomic physics

• Proven research experience in quantum experiments involving optical, vacuum, and control systems

• Strong background in laser systems, ultra-high vacuum technology, and electronics control for quantum systems

• Ability to work in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams
