Research Software Engineer

The Centre for Defence & Security AI (CDSAI) at the University of Lincoln, established in 2024, is looking to appoint talented Research Software Engineers in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI and national defence/security, with strong links to the UK’s defence establishment, government, and industry.

As part of an ambitious and growing team, you will develop advanced AI systems, engage in collaborative projects, and apply best practices in research software engineering. The role will allow you to work with state-of-the-art equipment, benefit from strong institutional support, and make meaningful contributions to high-impact research.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop advanced AI-based research software systems.

• Apply modern software engineering tools and principles in collaborative projects.

• Contribute to DevOps processes and high-performance computing initiatives.

• Produce high-quality research outputs and support dissemination of findings.

• Support the growth of CDSAI through funding applications and collaborations.

• Actively engage with defence and security partners at national and regional levels.

Candidate Requirements:

• PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.

• Strong research track record in AI and software engineering.

• Skilled in modern programming and software development environments.

• Ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team.

• Willingness to undergo UK national security vetting processes.

Contract Details:

• Fixed-term: 18 months.

• Full-time (1 FTE).

• Closing Date: 20 August 2025.
