Senior Ecologist

Description:

Mott MacDonald, a leading global engineering, management, and development consultancy, is seeking a Senior Ecologist to join its West Midlands ecology team. The role offers a chance to contribute to multi-disciplinary projects while leading ecological surveys, managing field data, and delivering technical reports. You will play a key role in supporting sustainable development and biodiversity protection across a variety of projects.

Key Responsibilities:

✔ Lead and oversee ecological surveys, including habitat and protected species assessments
✔ Interpret wildlife legislation, policy, and guidelines to advise clients effectively
✔ Prepare high-quality ecological reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments and Habitat Regulations Assessments
✔ Manage field data collection and ensure compliance with industry best practices
✔ Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across environmental and engineering disciplines
✔ Support sustainable approaches that protect and enhance biodiversity
✔ Travel across the UK for site assessments and project collaboration

Candidate Requirements

Essential:

✔ Degree in Ecology (or directly related subject)
✔ Chartered (or near-chartered) status with a relevant professional body
✔ Strong knowledge of UK wildlife legislation, policy, and ecological best practices
✔ Experience in leading ecological surveys and delivering technical reports
✔ Excellent report writing skills with attention to detail
✔ Willingness to travel across the UK

Desirable:

✔ Master’s degree or higher in Ecology or a related field
✔ Experience in mentoring and managing junior ecologists
✔ Natural England protected species licenses, particularly for great crested newts and/or bats
✔ Experience in Ecological Impact Assessment and Habitat Regulations Assessments
