Description:
This is a hands-on, site-based engineering role working physically on trains and in rail environments. The role requires regular travel to live rail sites across the UK and physical installation and maintenance work on rolling stock.
We are looking for an Engineer to join our Site Team, carrying out hands-on installation, commissioning, and maintenance work directly on trains predominantly out of our Derby production facility with occasional nationwide visits.
This is a practical, physically active role involving regular work on rolling stock, in depots, sidings, and other rail environments. You will be installing, commissioning, and maintaining advanced onboard systems including machine-vision cameras, laser measurement systems, thermal sensors, embedded Linux devices, IP networking, and GPS/4G/5G equipment.
The role requires confidence working in operational rail environments, secure or restricted sites, and following strict safety procedures. Previous rail industry experience is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Liaise with clients to understand and help plan timings for site-based activities.
- Plan work, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Contribute to design, building, configuring, and testing systems.
- Install and commission systems that have been tested in our production facilities.
- Independently carry out work on-site in a safety-conscious and professional manner.
- Build relationships with key on-site personnel.
- Communicate proactively with other team members to troubleshoot problems and create solutions.
- Create and maintain technical and test documentation.
- Work with our Business Development team to carry out unit/location surveys for potential new projects and installs.
- Ensure tools, materials, and work areas are kept organised and safe.
- Follow health & safety procedures and contribute to a safe working environment.
- Report faults, hazards, and incidents to the supervisor/manager.
- Support other site operations as required.
